The first thing that people think about when hearing the words plastic surgery and breasts is breast augmentation. Large breasts carry more physical and psychological discomfort than is usually suspected. Breast reduction is not only surgery that is undergone for aesthetic reasons, but the surgery also offers relaxation in a functional sense. Women considering breast reduction often have a variety of complaints:
- Pain. One of the most important reasons for considering a breast reduction is pain. The weight of the breasts ensures that your upper body hangs more forward, making it more difficult for you to stand up straight. This puts pressure on both the neck and back muscles and leads to pain complaints.
- Psychological complaints. Uncertainty and shame about chest size can cause an unpleasant feeling. Outerwear doesn’t always fit well and getting nasty or suggestive comments does not improve self-confidence.
- Restriction of freedom of movement. Exercising with large breasts is not practical. Running can cause pain complaints because of the movements of the breasts, and effective workouts are virtually impossible because the breasts are “in the way”.
- The breasts do not fit your body.
Breast reduction in Turkey removes both surplus glandular, fatty and skin tissue, making the breasts smaller. Your body is in better proportion after the procedure and the pain complaints are taken away.
You don’t just quickly or impulsively make a decision for a breast reduction. It is a radical choice to have your breasts reduced, and it is important to prepare yourself for the procedure. The plastic surgeon will give you information about the course of treatment, the recovery period and the results that you can expect. In addition, both the advantages and disadvantages of breast reduction are discussed with you.

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts an average of 2 hours. Before the operation, the plastic surgeon will discuss with you which surgical technique is being applied to you. The technique that is most commonly used reduces the size of the breast by removing glandular, fatty, and skin tissue at the bottom. A first scar appears on the underside. A figure seam is created to give your breasts a natural shape. This seam runs straight down from the nipple. This also forms a scar. The plastic surgeon moves the nipple and can possibly reduce the areola. The final scar is anchor-formed. The shape of the scar depends on the technique used. While still in the operating room, the surgeon may insert drains that drain wound fluid and blood and leave them in. These drains are usually removed the next day.
When everything is going well with you, you will receive permission from the plastic surgeon to leave the clinic. A few days after the procedure, you can take a shower and wear a bra. Opt for the use of a seamless sports bra, without underwires. The preference is for a bra with a front closure. The operation will have reduced your cup size, but the shape remains unchanged. Wear a sturdy sports bra for at least three weeks after breast reduction, day and night. The first week you will need to take it easy and try to delegate many of the tasks at home. Rest benefits the recovery, and the final scarring. Most women are back to work three weeks after a breast reduction. Six weeks after the procedure, sporting activities can also be carefully resumed. In consultation with the doctor, scars can be treated with a scar cream. It takes, on average, 6 to 12 months for your breasts to attain their final shape. Most women who undergo a breast reduction are satisfied with the results. Plastic surgeons cannot always guarantee a good, symmetrical result. Improvements are visible immediately after the procedure. Yet it takes a long time for your breasts to attain their final shape. Occasionally the result is less symmetrical than expected, or there is a reduced feeling in the nipples. Sometimes a second procedure may be necessary to achieve the desired final result. Your breasts can become larger due to weight gain, but pregnancy or the use of the pill can also contribute to this. The reverse, sagging of the breasts, is of course also possible.

The breasts are reduced with a breast correction. Women with large, heavy breasts often experience physical complaints such as back, neck and shoulder pain. After breast correction, these complaints have disappeared and/or have been greatly reduced. With a breast reduction, the breasts are lifted simultaneously, giving them an improved shape.
Healthy women who are dissatisfied with the cup size or the size and shape of the breasts are generally eligible for breast reduction. A too-high BMI value, or being overweight, can be a reason to discourage the operation. The chances of side effects and complications are then too large.
In principle, it is possible to achieve the desired cup size. During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will check with you regarding which shape and size of the breasts suits you best. However, guarantees cannot be given. The final size depends on the basic width that your breast has.
This depends on various factors. A large part of the breast consists of fatty tissue. If you gain a lot of weight, the breast will grow with it. If you remain at a stable weight, this chance is much smaller. The hormone balance, for example, also affects the size and shape of your breasts.
Because of the procedure, there is a chance of a change of feeling in the nipple(s). The changes in feeling are caused by the moving of the nipple. The greater the distance of the nipple’s relocation, the greater the chance that feeling in the nipple may change. The skin around the scars may also undergo a change in feeling. These risks will already have been discussed and explained with you during the consultation.
After the procedure the wounds are covered with special plasters. Occasionally, a tight bandage is used. This will be replaced the next day with a (seamless) sports bra. You will need to wear this bra day and night for the first four weeks. Then for two more weeks, during the day. For a speedy recovery it is important to follow the doctor’s instructions.
The treatment technique depends on the size of your breasts and the extent to which the reduction will need to take place. With large, major breast reductions, the so-called anchor technique is generally chosen. If your areola is not too far down and the size is not too large, the keyhole technique will be performed. The choice for a treatment technique is explained during the consultation.
In the days following the procedure, your breasts may be swollen and may feel sore. This disappears during the days and weeks that follow. Any muscle pain diminishes quickly in the days following the procedure. You can combat the pain with acetaminophen. Your breasts may be numb at first. Feeling returns after a few weeks to months.
You stay one night in the clinic after a breast reduction. Your body needs time to recover. The area that has been operated on is swollen during the first few weeks and may therefore feel a bit ‘over-ripe’. The scars are bright red and sometimes slightly swollen. Both the breast tissue and the surrounding skin must adapt to the new situation. This will take several weeks. Most swellings and blood deposits disappear after 10 to 14 days. Depending on the activities that you perform, you can fully return to work after about 2 to 4 weeks.
Scars after breast reduction are unavoidable. The experienced plastic surgeon will make the incisions so that the later scars are minimally visible. For most women who undergo breast reduction, the scars of the nipple run down into the breast fold and around the areola. The scars are well healed after 12 to 18 months and will hardly be visible.
The possibility of breastfeeding after a breast correction depends on the glandular tissue that has been removed. If a lot of mammary gland tissue is removed, chances are that breastfeeding may become difficult. Discuss any desire to have a child with the plastic surgeon prior to surgery. The doctor may advise you to postpone the procedure until a later time.
The decrease in the volume of the breasts is of course immediately visible. However, it takes some time before the breasts take on their ultimate form. Depending on the treatment technique, this can take 2 weeks to 3 months.
About 3 to 6 months after a breast correction, it may be difficult to correctly interpret a self-exam, because of the scar tissue present. This same scar tissue can also disrupt a mammogram. Are you older than 40 at the time of a breast reduction? Then have a mammogram, before the procedure.
